Have you decided to move house yourself and don’t know where to start. Here at BAR Services, we can fully support you with our experienced team to make sure moving house doesn’t need to be the most stressful day of your life.
When it comes to moving house it can all seem very overwhelming, start by making a list of everything you need to do leading up to moving day. It may seem obvious to write a list but making a clear list of priorities will relieve the stress of the big day.
1. Declutter
Decluttering is the best way to start, sometimes you don’t realise how much we automatically hoard away in different cupboards until we empty and sort through them. If you find unwanted items why not donate them to charity or sell them on. Decluttering will save you time, money and space. You will need fewer boxes, won’t spend as much time packing up unwanted items and you will create more space at your new home.
2. Write a list
Writing a moving home list is fundamental in making sure your house move is as stress-free as possible. This list encompasses all the elements of moving not just the packing. You may want to include tasks such as informing your bank of a new address, getting your mail redirected, changing your TV licence and home insurance. As part of this list make sure you have a clear order of which rooms to pack first and last. Pack items you use on a daily basis last and pack seasonal items such as Christmas decorations and gardening tools first.
3. Pack Early
Now that you have decluttered and written a list you will have a better understanding of how much you have to pack, we suggest you start early. We would recommend preparing for a house move for up to two months for a large house and one month for a smaller house, but of course, this varies from family to family. Giving yourself enough time to organise and pack efficiently will certainly help on the day and with unpacking the other side.
4. One room at a time
Don’t get overwhelmed, if you have a five bedroom house with three children and two dogs this may seem like an impossible task but it doesn’t have to be. Try focusing on one room at a time, for example, give yourself a couple of days to pack up and organise each room. Labelling correctly and packing thoroughly will help when you’re unpacking the other end.
5. Pack a box of essentials
Sometimes packing an essential box gets neglected but it is very important. When your entire life possessions are in boxes it can be a very stressful time trying to remember what is in which box. Make sure you give yourself a box of essentials, some important things you may want to include are toilet roll, phone charger, soap, towels, a change of clothes, cleaning products, hoover, kettle and tea/ coffee, small amounts of cutlery and maybe a radio as unpacking with music always helps.
At BAR Services we can supply you with essential packing kits to help you on your big day. From small to medium kits they will provide you with everything you will need. These will include small and medium boxes, bubble wrap, packs of paper sheets, brown tape and marker pens.
A question we regularly get asked is “how many boxes do I need”. This is never a straight forward answer as there are many factors that can affect this. We can certainly provide you with a rough guideline that will help.
